The Rivergreen Rays swim team is a not-for-profit, summer recreational swim team that teaches advanced swimming techniques, teamwork, and sportsmanship to local children in a fun environment. Membership is open to any families in the area with children meeting the age and abilities requirement. Children do not have to be competitive swimmers prior to joining.
Swimmers must be between the ages 5-18, and have to be able to swim the length of the pool by the first meet. Coaches will work with swimmers who cannot swim the length of the pool during preseason practice. However, no coaches will be in the water with swimmers during meets.
In the pool, Rays coaches work on teaching correct stroke technique in all four strokes, swimming skills like dives and turns, and improving endurance. The coaches also emphasize teaching the value of sportsmanship, teamwork and team spirit - all in a fun and friendly environment.
The summer league season is a fast paced two month period but everyone who experiences it has a great time, makes new friends and looks forward to the next year.Summer league swimming is a "family" sport. Parents are an integral part of the success of the team as the Rays are a volunteer lead, and run, organization. Other than the coaches, the team is run 100% with volunteers. Each family is responsible for volunteering for each seasons respective points requirement. Volunteer jobs include lane timers, ribbons, scorekeepers, etc. We have made the signup process for volunteer jobs during the season as easy as possible. You will be expected to meet the minimum volunteer requirements or your $150 volunteer check will be cashed at the end of the summer league season. The Rays could not happen without all the parents helping as it takes many volunteers to run multiple swim meets (home and away), prepare social activities, order gear, throw an end of season party and more! Any money raised by the Rays ultimately goes back to our swimmers and parents by paying for coaching, pools, equipment, social activities, t-shirts, medals, trophies and everything else. This is what makes the Rays fabulous!
In 2019, the RiverGreen Rays swim team, along with other teams that were members of the Cherokee Summer Swim Association, joined the Atlanta Swim Association (ASA). The ASA is a summer swim league composed of community and subdivision swim teams in Atlanta area. Teams are divided into divisions and we are in the Cherokee County Division. Rays Home Meets are held at the Heritage Club pool.
The swim season culminates in a divisional swim meet that will take place at Georgia Tech, where swimmers will have the opportunity to advance to the ASA Championship meet.
Even though our former league was dissolved, we will still swim against the same teams we have in the past. We continue to be under the quasi supervision of the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency (CRPA). In 2019, the CRPA will host the GPRA District Meet at the Cherokee Aquatic Center and swimmers can advance to the GRPA State Meet, also hosted at the Cherokee Aquatic Center.
